As things often do, a chance conversation over supper with friends led Hugh Davidson to a complete life change – switching careers from electronic engineering to baby swimming. And all agree that a life of Splishing Splashing and Humpty Dumpties suits him admirably; in a way that perhaps a suit and tie never did.

When Water Babies Scotland was born in 2003, Ailsa was a bit busy giving birth to one of its first recruits, Beatrice, joining brother Tad. Nowadays, with the kids off socialising, Ailsa helps Hugh run the office alongside the lovely (‘we only wish theyd work full-time’) Fiona Downie and Lynn Richmond, and the equally lovely ('thank goodness they are full-time') Nadia Moncrieff and Alison Henderson.

There is nothing less than a shoal of Water Babies instructors in Scotland these days. Debbie Kelso was the first to join, breaking free from the shackles of midwifery to join Hugh in the pool. She was followed by Janey Henderson, then Shauna Ansell, and Ruth Noonan. Finally the crew is completed by Lisa Colburn, Ruth Fisher, Phil Jessup and Megan Campbell .
