Kate Evans is a tribute to state education: straight A’s, three medical degrees, one year off becoming a Consultant in A&E. So what does she decide to do with all that training? Jack it in and become a swimming instructor!
‘The ward hours were pretty inflexible with a young family,’ she explains, ‘and in truth, I’d be a rubbish GP as I’m not very good with people who aren’t actually sick.’ Glad to see even Kate’s not perfect – although, she’s so lovely, we’re not sure we believe her.
An answer to her working dilemma was provided when she and husband, Paul (a GP who loves all kinds of patients) took the kids, Polly and Sam to Water Babies classes. ‘Unusually, I’d learnt to swim as a baby myself,’ Kate recalls (we’ve always said it makes you brainy) ‘swimming three miles when I was just six. With our own children, it quickly became the one activity we’d reschedule everything else to attend. Polly adored it from the start. If I’m honest, Sam was originally rather more fowl than fish, but now the confidence and fun they both enjoy in water is amazing.’
Kate isn't completley hanging up her stethescope - although we're hoping she won't be needing that particular tool! She's already heavily involved in the new Paediatric Safety course we plan to roll out soon. 'And, coming from a medical background will also help in the pool. I'm happy to reassure parents who might be nervous etc. And yes, I accept I'll get a lot of questions about colic, reflux etc along the way. But it's great to be able to continue to share my knowledge.

· Friday 1:00pm Fort Stamford Health and Fitness Plymstock
· Saturday 12:00 midday at Kenleys Day Nursery Plymstock
